What is erythrocyte sedimentation rate or ESR?
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate or ESR is a hematology test that measures how quickly erythrocytes (red blood cells) descend to the bottom of a test tube, reported in mm per hour. A high or raised ESR denotes inflammation in the body and may indicate an infection, injury, chronic disease, autoimmune disease or other medical condition. A low ESR may indicate a blood disorder, like polycythemia, sickle cell anemia or leukocytosis. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate or ESR blood test is also known as sedimentation rate, sed rate or Westergren sedimentation rate. It is mostly accompanied by other hematology tests, such as the C-reactive protein (CRP) test, to make a well-founded diagnosis.
Alifax: fast and reliable results in only 20 seconds
Since 1988, Alifax has been a notable and valued producer of clinical diagnostic instrumentation for ESR analysis and rapid bacterial culture. The Alifax capillary photometry technology is the only technology capable of providing results in just 20 seconds, as opposed to 30-60 minutes with older technologies. That is because it measures the intensity of the blood cell aggregation. The highly innovative technology has been recognized by the CLSI as an alternative method for ESR and has been awarded ISO 9001 and 13485 certification. The Alifax analyzer optimizes ESR testing, increases accuracy and reduces both costs and test turnaround time. We offer six types of Alifax ESR analyzers: Test 1, Roller 20PN, Roller 10PN, Roller 20MC, Roller 20LC and Jo Plus.
